There are many places to visit in Stockholm, one of the most amazing and beautiful cities in Europe. With a privileged location in an archipelago of more than 24,000 islands, a historic center full of charming corners and several spectacular museums, Stockholm is perfect for a few days’ getaway.
Based on our experience during the trip to Stockholm in 4 days, we have made this list of what we believe are the 10 most important places to visit in Stockholm. We start!
1. Gamla Stan
Stockholm’s Gamla Stan is the historic center and the most beautiful area of the city. Its narrow, cobbled streets, including the Maten Trotzigs Grand, less than a meter wide, charming shops, medieval buildings with colorful facades and squares, including Stortoget, make it a perfect place to stroll.
And as we cannot forget the gastronomy, we will tell you that to travel around this Nordic city in which the weather is quite cold all year round, it is advisable to take some delicious hot chocolate in one of its many bars and restaurants as well as try their typical dishes such as meatballs, herring and fresh salmon.
A good option if it’s your first time in the city is to book a walking tour through the center with a guide in Spanish or this 3-hour tour that includes more places of interest in Stockholm.
2. Vasa Museum
On the island of Djurgarden is the impressive Vasa Museum, one of the most important places to visit in Stockholm, specially built to house the warship Vasa and its more than 4,000 objects that are still in a very good condition today.
What makes this unique ship in the world is that it sank the day it was launched, in 1628, recovering it in 1961, 331 years later, which meant that it was preserved until today almost intact thanks to the low level of salt and of molluscs from the Baltic Sea. The Vasa with a length of 69 meters from bow to stern, was one of the largest warships of its time and the pride of an entire nation, although I only sail three hundred meters and sank by an excess of cannons.
Climbing the 365 steps of the Stadshuset tower to have the best panoramic views of the city center is one of the best things to do in Stockholm. The Stadhuset or City Hall of Stockholm, located in a privileged location on the shores of
Kungsholmen Island, stands out for the red color of its bricks and its tower, being one of the most iconic images of the city.
It is worth the guided tour of its interior in which the Blue Room, headquarters of the annual banquet of the Nobel Prizes and the Golden Hall, full of mosaics with more than 18 million pieces.
4. Metro, one of the places to visit in Stockholm
The Stockholm metro network is one of the most impressive in the world, in which 90 of its 100 stations are decorated with works of art by renowned artists. This underground museum has been declared the longest art gallery in the world and to know and enjoy it, all you have to do is buy the ticket in the form of a subway ticket and go down at its different stations.
We recommend visiting only the most famous and with the most striking works such as Kungsttadgarden, Radhuset, Solna Centrum, Stadium or Tekniska Hoskolan.
5. Skansen Open-Air Museum
The Skansen Museum of 1891, located on the island of Djurgarden, is the oldest open-air museum in the world and one of the most essential places to visit in Stockholm. This great green space goes through the history and culture of Sweden through its more than 150 farms and characteristic houses of each region of the country.
Some of its most famous places are the town hall, the Bollnastorget market square or the 18th century Seglora wooden church. Although you can invest a full day in this visit, if you do not have so much time, we recommend you to spend a couple of hours walking around Skansen and picking up food at one of their stalls, with which to recover, in one of the several picnic areas scattered around the park.
If these Stockholm attractions are inspiring you to visit this beautiful destination then don’t wait & book your flights to Stockholm now to explore much more
